Laptop & PC Servicing

What's lurking inside your computer?

Even the most house proud of customers wouldn't believe amount of dirt and debris that finds it's way into a typical PC.
Think about it, a tower type PC unit is usually sat on the floor, on a carpet, next to your fidgeting feet - all the dust and muck kicked up by your movement and the dust bunnies that are produced, get sucked into the computer tower by the cooling fans.
A laptop is usually used on your knee or other soft fabric surface, with it's fans facing down towards the material beneath it - sucking in fibres and hairs etc.

If the computer is not kept cool, the CPU (processor) will overheat, and in an attempt to stop itself burning out - will reduce it's operating speed (a process known as thermal throttling). Repeated overheating of the CPU can also degrade the thermal paste that sits between the CPU and its heatsink, leading to system instability and crashes.
Continuing to use an overheating computer, will drastically reduce the device' life span, and often causes premature failure of components - Maybe even a house fire!

When we clean a PC, we strip all the major components down and clean all contacts and surfaces with HVLP air, solvent wipes, anti-static brushes and lots of care!!

Desktop Servicing

We strip out all peripheral components (We never remove motherboards or CPU to service), then inspect and clean each individual component with filtered HVLP air, anti-static brushes, alcohol wipes, IPA solvents or silicone oil as appropriate.
We oil the bearings of all accesible fans, and apply high quality fresh thermal paste to the CPU. We always replace the CMOS battery on desktops over 3 years old, and then endeveour to ensure all cables and components are placed to allow optimal airflow through the PC.

Many customers can't believe how much quieter their PC is after a good service, and this usually resolves most stabillity issues caused by overheating.

Laptop Servicing

Laptops are a little more involved to service, but probably benefit most from a good clean.
The tolerances inside a laptop mean they struggle to keep cool at the best of times, but a wall of fluff can build up between the fan and cooling fins, meaning the fan is just pushing hot air around the inside of the laptop.

We strip the bottom half of the laptop apart to reveal the motherboard and cooling system. This involves removing all components (including motherboard usually) to fully clean all components with filtered HVLP air, anti-static brushes, alcohol wipes, IPA solvents or silicone oil as appropriate.

We oil the fan or can replace the fan instead if required, there is no extra labour charge for doing this as part of a service - just the additional cost of the fan.

We replace the CMOS battery if a standard 2032 coin cell is fitted. But if a fly-lead CMOS battery is fitted, then we only replace these if requested as they are priced depending on part number fitted.
